Record Attendance at Imagine Peace Tower Lighting

More than 2,100 people attended the eighth annual lighting of Yoko Ono’s Imagine Peace Tower on Viðey island off Reykjavík on Thursday evening—a new record, ruv.is reports.

The tower is lit each year on October 9, the birthday of Ono’s late husband John Lennon. A special ceremony is held on the occasion to which members of the public are invited.

The tower was erected on Viðey in 2007 in memory of John Lennon and as a symbol of his and Ono’s continuing campaign for world peace.

The tower is lit until December 8, the day of his death, as well as from December 21 to December 28 for Winter Solstice, on New Year’s Eve and from March 21 to March 28, to mark the first week of spring.
