A man in his thirties has been arrested for trying to smuggle four kilos of cocaine to Iceland. Customs officers have never before confiscated so much cocaine at once.
The man tried to smuggle the four kilos of cocaine and some amphetamine by hiding it in a Mercedes Benz Sprinter delivery van imported from Cuxhaven in Germany, as Fréttabladid reports.
Customs officers in Reykjavík had already found the drugs on November 11 last year, but the van was left by the transport company Samskip in Sundahöfn harbor in Reykjavík until early February when its registered recipient came to collect it.
The man was arrested on February 9 and convicted at Reykjavík District Court the next day and will be three weeks in custody. According to Fréttabladid, the man has earlier been imprisoned for drug violations.
The National Center of Addiction Medicine (SÁÁ) estimates the cocaine confiscated to be worth at least ISK 50 million (EUR 572,000, USD 753,000).
