Ram Groping Tournament Held in Iceland

The seventh annual Icelandic championship in ram groping will be held on Sunday in the Sheep Center in Saevangur near Hólmavík in the Strandir region, the eastern part of the West Fjords peninsula. Admission is free.

According to news web strandir.is, this type of “sport” has increased in popularity every year since the ram groping tournament was first held in 2003 and more people attend the event every year.

There will be plenty of activities for the entire family in Hólmavík on Sunday. Admission to the sheep center and its exhibition will be free, coffee and cakes will be on offer as well as trips on a tractor wagon. There will be live entertainment and games will be organized on the local sports field.

The ram groping competition begins at 2 pm. Ram experts will estimate the qualities of four well-built rams with modern technology and then determine which ram has the best qualities.

Contestants then try to reach the same conclusion as the judges with their hands and brains. Both amateurs and professionals can compete.

The winner of each category will be presented with a special prize and the winner in the professional category will also receive the ram-groping trophy, which will be passed on to the next winner the following year.

The Strandir region will also celebrate its annual “Djúpavík Days” festival this weekend. Visitors can participate in sight-seeing tours, sailing tours and midnight walks, watch plays, listen to concerts and feast on a seafood buffet.
