The 2012 Landsmót, the national horse festival, will take place June 25 to July 1 in Reykjavík, and if there are enough contenders, a proper 300-meter horserace in the gallop will be on the program.

Racing used to be an important part of horse tournaments until the end of the 20th century, with riders competing in the trot, the gallop and cart racing. However, in the past years, riders have only raced in the flying pace, Morgunblaðið reports.
According to Haraldur Þórarinsson, chairman of the National Association of Horse Owners, young riders enjoy racing their horses in the gallop and he hopes that this initiative will increase the public’s interest in horsemanship.
