Police officers across the country agree that speeding has been greatly reduced after a special campaign against it was implemented across the country. Morgunblaðð reports, however, that they are still concerned about tourists to Iceland who drive too quickly and neither adhere to speed limits nor slow down when instructed to do so by the police, resulting in a high speed chase. According to the police, the tourists usually claim that they were not aware of the speed limit and that they did not notice the police chasing them. Police authorities remain concerned about how little visitors to Iceland appear to know about conditions and rules on Icelandic roads.
