Pumping Ship still Waiting at Westman Islands

The pumping ship Perla is still docked at the Westman Islands as conditions at Landeyjahöfn harbor are not suitable for deepening, ruv.is reports.

This morning, waves reached a height of nearly two meters and in order for the ship to operate, waves cannot exceed more than a meter.

According to Perla’s captain, Óttar Jónsson, there is nothing else to do but monitor weather and sea conditions on an hourly basis. He does not expect to be able to begin the deepening until after noon.

Since Saturday, 1,800 cubic meters of sand have been removed from the new harbor. It is estimated that approximately twenty thousand cubic meters must be removed in order for Herjólfur to be able to recommence sailing to Landeyjahöfn. Therefore, Herjólfur will be sailing to and from Thorlákshöfn in the coming days.
