Fund manager Sigurður Kristján Sigurðsson became a Puffling-Hero this week, saving a tiny puffin chick in the middle of Hverfisgata Street, central Reykjavík. RÚV first reported.
Sigurður, who was in a cab on his way to a meeting, asked the driver to stop the car. “She kinda crawled straight into my arms and didn’t want to leave.” The next thing he did was to bring it to the cab, letting his wife know that he was taking the puffling home before continuing on his way to his meeting.
Strangely enough, this wasn’t the first time Sigurður had rescued a puffling in the city, having actually done so before in Ártúnshöfði. Growing up in the Westman Islands, where Icelandic puffins usually reside, he could be considered an expert. He mentioned it is important not to handle the young birds too much, as they’re covered in fat that ought not to be rubbed out.
“My family came shortly after the meeting to pick me up and we brought the puffling to the sea. She did well and looked very healthy, which was nice to see.”
According to Sigurður, Puffins tend to fly in the direction of light, meaning that it had likely spotted the city lights of Reykjavík, mistaking them for the Moon’s light and getting confused in the process.
