Public Meeting Attendees Propose General Strike

By Iceland Review

A speaker at a public meeting held in the University of Iceland Cinema last night urged the representatives of labor unions who attended the meeting to organize a general strike to force the government to resign.

Both Gylfi Arnbjörnsson, president of the Confederation of Labor (ASÍ), and Eiríkur Jónsson, chairman of the Icelandic Teachers’ Union, said striking is too valuable a tool to be used otherwise than for legal purposes, Fréttabladid reports.

At the two-hour meeting, which was well attended, labor union representatives and Minister of Business Affairs Björgvin G. Sigurdsson answered questions from the public. Attendees called for the resignation of the government.
