Protests against new highland road

The Iceland Travel Industry Association has issued a statement protesting against the planned construction of a new all-year road across Kjölur in Iceland’s highland.

In the statement it says that the highway would be constructed in an untouched territory, instead of in the area where the current road is, cutting through hiking and horse paths north of Hofsjökull glacier and depriving the highland of its characteristics. Fréttabladid reports.

The Travel Industry Association said they would like to be consulted when roads are to be constructed in popular tourist destinations.
