Protestors Try to Prevent Road in Lava Field

Approximately 20 people of environmental campaign group Hraunavinir (‘Lava Friends’) took position at the edge of the lava field Gálgahraun in the capital region this morning to prevent the construction of a road through the lava, connecting Garðabær and Álftanes.

The contractor showed up there with two diggers this morning and has fenced the construction area off. The protestors are located inside the fence, ruv.is reports.

Hraunavinir demand that the contractor halt operations until the legality of the road construction has been determined by the court.

The case of Hraunavinir against the Icelandic Road Administration opened in district court on Friday. The lawyer of the campaign group submitted a request that the EFTA Court give its opinion on this case.

Last week it was reported that Hraunavinir and the contractor had reached an agreement on the latter halting operations until the court has reached a decision on the road construction.
