Protest outside Parliament Draws 1,500

By Iceland Review

Around 1,500 people gathered in Austurvöllur square in front of Alþingi, Iceland’s parliament, yesterday evening to protest the government’s actions. The state of the healthcare system was at the top of protesters’ agenda.

Others protested the government’s debt cancelation plan, which was presented at a press conference yesterday, as well as the government’s funding priorities, reports.

Last Monday, around 4,500 people gathered in a similar protest outside parliament. Apart from the healthcare system, people also protested a range of other issues such as the Coast Guard acquiring submachine guns and the failure of Interior Minister Hanna Birna Kristjánsdóttir’s failure to resign after the leak of confidential information from her ministry.

Protestors also rallied in support of music teachers and doctors who have been on strike for better wages.
