Icelandic politicians are considering a food labeling bill akin to the European protected origin certificate.
The likely new bill, which would need to be debated by the Alþingi parliament, would aim to protect and promote food names which refer to special origin, region or tradition.
Icelandic fisheries and agriculture minister, Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson unveiled the idea in a written response to a parliamentary question from Social Democrat MP Össur Skarphéðinsson.
The bill focuses on providing legal protection to food products with names strongly connected to origin or region.
The minister claims that such a law would allow domestic producers to better compete with imported goods. Such legislation would also create new opportunities for Icelandic products overseas, Vísir.is reported.
