The board of Associated Icelandic Ports (Faxaflóahafnir) has agreed to put forth a motion at their next meeting to explore the possibility of protecting the ‘fishermen’s huts’ in Reykjavík’s old harbour, mbl.is reports. The board is hoping to either protect the land on which the buildings stand, or their exterior appearance.
The huts are an important part of the harbour’s history as well as its aesthetic character. Their conservation is not currently protected by law. Recent development plans in the neighbourhood called for tearing down some of the huts, but were later changed. The board would like to avoid similar issues in the future.
The huts are more than 80 years old, dating back to 1933.
