MP for the Progressive Party Höskuldur Þórhallsson has announced that he will run against the party’s chair, former Prime Minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson, as leader of the Northeast constituency.
Höskuldur stated in his announcement, published in Vikudagur, that he supports current Prime Minister Sigurður Ingi Jóhansson for party chair, encouraging him to challenge Sigmundur in the upcoming general party convention.
Höskuldur ran against Sigmundur as party chair in 2009—and lost. However, due to a mistake by the election board, Höskuldur was announced the winner, Vísir recounts.
Sigmundur has served as chair of the Progressive Party since. He became PM in 2013 but stepped down following the Panama Papers scandal in April.
