Progressive Party MP Announces Departure

Vigdís Hauksdóttir, MP for the Progressive Party and chair of Alþingi’s Budget Committee, has has announced she won’t be running for Alþingi, the Icelandic parliament, in the elections this fall, RÚV reports. She states she made the decision after consulting with her family. In a press release, she states she is proud of her work and says she has worked hard for her country.

For years, Vigdís has been one of the country’s most controversial politicians. She told RÚV, “When the discussion about me is the worst and most extreme on the internet, then I know I’m doing my best work.”

Another MP for the Progressive Party, Frosti Sigurjónsson, had already announced he is not running for reelection in the fall.

A Gallup poll published on Saturday shows the Progressive Party, which is one of the two coalition parties in government, with 10 percent support.
