Support for the Progressive Party has waned sharply, reveals a recent poll conducted by Frettabladid newspaper. According to the survey, if elections were held today the Party would lose a total of seven seats in Parliament.
The Party’s drop in the polls is said to be related to the unpopularity of current Prime Minister Halldor Asgrimsson, who heads the party.
Currently, the Progressive Party along with the Independence Party form the coalition that makes up the conservative government.
The break down of government is as follows: the Independence Party holds 22 seats, the Progressive Party is at 12, the Alliance Party (Social Dems) has 20, the Left Green has 5 representatives and the Libertarian Party has 4.
Frettabladid suggests that if the election were held today, both the Independence Party and the Alliance Party would secure 23 seats each, while the Progressive party would secure only 5 seats, a seven seat drop. The Left Green would jump to 9 seats, and the Libertarian party would remain the same.
