Private Hospital to Rise in Mosfellsbaer

A declaration of intent on the construction of a private hospital and a hotel in Mosfellsbaer, a neighboring town of Reykjavík, was signed on Friday. The hospital, which will be owned by PrimaCare, will specialize in hip and knee surgeries for foreigners.

It is estimated that the project could create up to 1,000 jobs in the municipality. The hospital’s location will be at Köldukvíslargljúfur at Tungumelar, where an up to 30,000 square meter building will be constructed. If everything goes according to plan, the first patients may be treated at the new hospital at the end of 2011, reports.

“There’s no need to explain what kind of a boost this will be for the local community. Not only will the project create 600-1,000 jobs in one go but it will also create extensive demand for related services, both because of hospital employees and the hospital’s patients and visitors,” said Mayor of Mosfellsbaer Haraldur Sverrisson.

Gunnar Ármannsson, managing director of PrimaCare, said he is satisfied with the planned location of the hospital. “The unique environment and Mosfellsbaer’s ambitious goal in environmental issues played a big part in us choosing the town.”
