A prison guard at Iceland’s maximum-security prison Litla Hraun has been remanded in custody for smuggling drugs into the prison. Two prisoners are also in remedial custody for the same reason. This is reported in all the main online media today.
The guard was arrested on Saturday with a substantial amount of drugs in his possession. He is thought to have planned to sell the drugs to inmates, and to have done so in the past. According to prison officials, drug use inside the prison has been rampant this summer, the cause of which now appears clear.
The guard, who is around 20 years old, worked as a summer employee at the prison. According to the prison warden, the rest of the guards are ‘in shock’ as a result of the arrest.
