Prime Minister of Iceland Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson responded to a letter by Ombudsman of Alþingi, the Icelandic parliament on Friday, asking whether his government had agreed on ethical regulations for its ministers.
Sigmundur stated that his government had not decided on any new ethical regulations and considered that those made by the former government in 2011 were still in effect, Fréttablaðið reports.
Sigmundur reasoned that with amendments to administrational law, each government is not under any legal obligation to make or confirm ethical guidelines for its ministers. However, the current government may consider changing the existing regulations to make them clearer and simpler, he added.
At the end of his letter to the ombudsman, the PM wrote: “… the undersigned asks whether ethical guidelines for the office of the Ombudsman of Alþingi have been established and if so, whether they can be made available.”
