Prime Minister meets with banks to discuss mortgages

According to Morgunbladid, the Prime Minister, Halldór Ásgrímsson, met with representatives of the Banker’s Association of Iceland to discuss the Icelandic mortgage lending market.

Bjarni Ármannsson, CEO of Glitnir (Íslandsbanki), and Halldór Kristjánsson, CEO of Landsbanki, represented the banks.

According to Morgunbladid, last February an ad-hoc committee appointed by the Minister of Social Affairs was entrusted with initiating a “wide ranging consultation” about the role of the government in the mortgage market. In an interim finding, the committee suggested last month that the government-operated Housing Finance Fund be changed into a mortgage lending bank.
