Pressure Mounts on the Mayor of Reykjavík

Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson, mayor of Reykjavík, has been accused of contradicting himself in explaining his part in the merger of the two energy companies Reykjavík Energy Invest and Geysir Green Energy.

Vilhjálmsson has explicitly denied having seen a list of selected employees of Reykjavík Energy Invest (REI) who had been offered handsome stock options. These stock options generated fierce criticism and most of them have now been revoked.

Gudmundur Thóroddsson, CEO of REI, has asserted that the list in question was distributed during a controversial meeting last Wednesday where the merger was approved by the owners of Reykjavík Energy—the parent company of REI. The merger was approved at the meeting. Svandís Svavarsdóttir, leader of the Left-Greens on Reykjavík’s City Council, has confirmed that she received the list at this meeting. Quoted by the national radio RÚV, Svavarsdóttir says that the debate has entered a new stage and the mayor must be “careful” because he seems to be contradicting himself.

A meeting of the city council has been scheduled today in which the merger will be discussed.
