Bessastadir, the official residence of the president of Iceland, basked in pink on Friday night. Bessastadir, along with hundreds of monuments around the world, is participating in Estée Lauder’s Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign, Global Landmarks Illumination.
Pink illumination will be visible in other parts of Iceland this month, including Selfoss, Akranes, Ísafjördur, on the Eastern Fjörds and Keflavík.
According to a statement, the campaign’s mission is to focus attention, and spread awareness, about breast cancer around the world.
In order to support support the Cancer Awareness Campaign, pink ribbons are on sale to in 30 stores throughout Iceland. Proceeds and donations will go to projects chosen by Icelandic Cancer Society and Samhjálp kvenna, a group of Icelandic women who have battled cancer.
Bylgjan radio reports that 160 – 170 Icelandic women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month around the world.
