Icelandic President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson and First Lady Eliza Reid have accepted the invitation of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark to an official visit to Denmark, Vísir reports.
The plan is for the president and his wife to arrive in Denmark on January 24. For decades, it has been the tradition for the Icelandic president to take his or her first official trip abroad to Denmark, or ever since President Ásgeir Ásgeirsson went there in 1954, invited by King Frederick IX.
President Sveinn Björnsson’s first official visit, on the other hand, was to the US in 1944, where he was invited by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
