President Opens Memorial Center for National Poet

President of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson opened a memorial center dedicated to national poet Jónas Hallgrímsson on Friday to mark his 200th birthday at the farm Hraun in Öxnadalur valley, northeast Iceland, where the poet was born.

The memorial center also serves as a museum about Hallgrímsson and an educational center, ruv.is reports.

An apartment has been established at Hraun where poets, writers, scientists and political pioneers will be able to dwell, because Hallgrímsson was in fact a 19th century politician, too, according to head of the Hraun in Öxnadalur Culture Society Tryggvi Gíslason.
