President of Iceland Sends Condolences to Danish Queen

President of Iceland Guðni Th. Jóhannesson sent his condolences to her majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark upon the death of her husband Prince Henrik, RÚV reports. Guðni Th. and First Lady Eliza Reid made an official visit to Denmark one year ago, where they were hosted by the royal family.

“Eliza and I met Prince Hinrik during our visit to Denmark and he looked well to us then,” Guðni stated. “He sat next to us and was in good spirits, enjoyed speaking French with Eliza and talked about this and that. And that’s the memory I have of him.”

Guðni said the Prince was a good host and seemed to enjoy welcoming the couple. “And we felt very good about it—how he and in fact the entire royal family welcomed us.”

Hinrik passed away last night at the age of 83. According to the Telegraph, Henrik was hospitalized in late January due to a lung infection and benign lung tumour, but returned to Fredensborg Castle to spend his last days there.
