President of Iceland Inaugurated for Fourth Time

President of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson was re-inaugurated yesterday. The ceremony launched the president’s fourth term in office. One term runs for four years and no one decided to candidate against Grímsson for the coming term.

Some areas in downtown Reykjavík were closed for traffic yesterday because of the ceremony, 24 Stundir reports.

The presidential office was established when Iceland became an independent republic on June 17, 1944 and Grímsson is the country’s fifth president.

The president is Iceland’s only representative who is elected directly by the entire nation. He or she serves as a non-political representative of the country.
