President ‘Felt Like a Rock Star’ on First Official Visit

On their first official visit yesterday, President of Iceland Guðni Th. Jóhannesson and his wife Eliza Reid went to Sólheimar, a sustainable community in South Iceland.

The couple was warmly welcomed by the residents and Guðni commented that he “felt like a rock star” as everybody wanted to take their picture with him.

“I wanted to come here. I wanted to bring attention to the good work which is carried out here, as I know that wherever you go in this office, it garners attention,” Guðni told Vísir.

At Sólheimar about 100 people, with and without special needs, live and work together, practicing organic farming, mainly in greenhouses, producing, for example, 18 tons of tomatoes annually.

“Cooperation and sustainability. These are sometimes empty phrases but here we witness what can really be achieved,” Guðni stated.

Sólheimar resident Reynir Pétur Steinunnarson said he likes Guðni and Eliza and appreciates that they came to the community for their first official visit. “It’s a great honor.”

Next weekend, Guðni, who took office on Monday, will attend the Great Fish Day festival in Dalvík, North Iceland, and Reykjavík Pride, where he will be the first president to address the Pride Parade.
