Iceland’s President Elect Guðni Th. Jóhannesson plans to attend Sunday’s football match in Paris when the Icelandic men’s national football team meets France in the EURO 2016 quarter-finals. He told CNN he has no intention to sit in the VIP zone, but will instead cheer on our team in the stands, wearing his Icelandic jersey.
“Why would I go in the VIP room and sip Champagne when I can do that anywhere in the world?” he asked CNN.
He spoke of Iceland’s success at the EURO 2016: “Of course, for Iceland as a country, this means a lot. It shows that if you set yourself a goal, work towards it, stick together and have discipline, then anything can happen.”
