Icelandic President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson and First Lady Eliza Reid spoke at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Friday, Vísir reports. The President delivered a lecture entitled “Lessons from Iceland: A Nation Striving to Punch Above Its Weight in a Globalized World,” while the First Lady spoke with students and staff about equality issues and women’s rights in Iceland—both what the nation has achieved on both counts, and what work still remains to be done.
It’s been a busy month for the presidential couple, as they only recently returned from a three-day state visit to Sweden. While in Sweden, the First Lady gave a lecture on literature and translation, entitled “Books Build Bridges,” at the Stockholm City Library, and the President delivered a lecture entitled “Are We Unique? The Need for National Identity in the Age of Globalization” at Stockholm University. They also toured eco-friendly housing in Stockholm, observed a research study about the Icelandic horse, and learned more about a local grocery store’s plan for reducing food waste for the benefit of low income residents, among other things.
