Preservation of Skálholt Church Rejected

katrin-jakobsdottir_radherrThe express preservation of the church, school and the surrounding area at the site of the ancient bishopric Skálholt by the National Architectural Heritage Board on November 16 was rejected by Minister of Education and Culture Katrín Jakobsdóttir yesterday.

Because of the preservation, the reconstruction of Þorláksbúð, a turf house next to the church had to be stopped, to the discontent of the project’s organizers.

The minister said in her statement on the issue that she has requested that the National Architectural Heritage Board review it in the conventional manner before making a decision on preservation.
