Winds in Keflavík were so strong early on Friday morning that a Boeing 757 jet sitting on the airport tarmac was spun around completely in the gusts, Vísir reports. The Icelandair airline was, thankfully, unoccupied at the time, and only collided with an unoccupied stair car.
There was some damage to the plane, which is now being inspected. It weighs close to a hundred tons, which goes to show just how powerful the wind was at the time. Wind and weather conditions caused problems throughout southern Iceland late on Thursday night and early Friday morning, stranding, for instance, almost 200 cars on the Hellisheiði mountain pass not far outside of Reykjavík. It was expected to become progressively calmer on Friday afternoon.
