Possible Progressive Party Leadership Change?

Minister of Social Affairs and Housing Eygló Harðardóttir has not decided whether to run against former Prime Minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson as leader of the Progressive Party, RÚV reports. The party leadership convened yesterday and decided to call a meeting of the party’s central committee. That committee will determine whether to hold a party convention to shape party policy and elect the party’s leadership.

Vice Party Chairman and Prime Minister Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson and Minister for Foreign Affairs Lilja Alfreðsdóttir have announced they won’t be running against the current chairman, Sigmundur Davíð. Eygló has issued no such statement. On the contrary, she told RÚV, “I haven’t made any decision about running against Sigmundur Davíð. He has indicated very clearly that he is interested in continuing [as party leader].”
