Possible Presidential Candidate

Presidential elections will be in Iceland next year, but so far, no one has announced the intention to run. Vísir reports today that one man appears to be interested in running for the position. This is Stefán Jón Hafstein, country director for the Icelandic International Development Agency in Uganda.

He has created a Facebook page called the President’s Role (Hlutverk forseta) where he calls for discussion about the subject.
This led Vísir to contact him and inquire about his interest in the position. “I’m thinking it through, as many have asked me to do,” he responded.

President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson confirmed Sunday that he had not made up his mind yet about seeking reelection, RÚV reports. He said he would announce his decision on New Year’s Day. At the end of this term, he will have served two decades as president, longer than any president in the history of the country.
