Iceland’s population has surpassed 350,000 for the first time ever, according to a report from Statistics Iceland published today. RÚV reported first.
The population at the end of the first quarter of 2018 was 350,710, having increased by 0.8 percent or 2,120 individuals from the previous quarter. Nearly two thirds of the population, 224,000, live in the capital area while the remaining 126,710 live outside of it.
Net migration was positive by 1,740 persons. Icelandic citizens account for 20 of that number while the remaining 1,720 are foreign nationals. Most foreign immigrants came from Poland, followed by Lithuania. Foreign citizens accounted for just over 11 percent of the populations at the end of the quarter, or a total of 39,570 persons.
