For many people in Iceland, a visit to the pool is part of the rhythm of everyday life.
So, unsurprisingly, RÚV reported happy faces upon Vesturbæjarlaug swimming pool’s reopening in Reykjavík yesterday morning. The facilities opened following a two-month closure for maintenance.
Located in the heart of the Vesturbær neighbourhood, the pool has long held a special place in the hearts of locals. Built in 1961, it’s a favourite for its relaxed atmosphere and sense of community.
The extended closure was necessary after inspections revealed the pool was in worse condition than initially expected. Significant masonry repairs were carried out to address structural issues.
At the same time, improvements were made to the entrance and reception area, and a new emergency system was installed to enhance safety.
For some Reykjavík residents, getting back into the water at Vesturbæjarlaug is a welcome return to routine.
