Pope Benedict XVI told Elín Flygenring, Iceland’s new permanent representative on the European Council in Strasbourg, that Iceland is in his prayers when she handed in her letter of credence as Iceland’s ambassador to the Vatican on Thursday.
“I pray that those who are responsible for political and economic decisions will let wisdom, foresight and public good be their guiding light,” the Pope said, Fréttabladid reports.
The Pope said he is certain that the Icelandic nation, who is famous for its resilience and bravery, will be able to sail through these difficult times and regain economic stability. For that, sensible decisions, based on moral values, are needed.
The Pope emphasized that the Vatican was following with great concern the difficulties facing entire nations because of the international economic crisis, adding that he is personally following proposals made on ways to regain stability of financial systems around the world.
