Exactly half of the supporters of the Independence party said they would vote for the agreement. Bjarni Benediktsson, Chairman of the party and 11 out of 16 party members in Althingi supported the agreement. David Oddsson, former party chairman, now editor of Morgunbladid, Iceland’s second biggest daily newspaper, is one of the agreement’s strongest opponents. Oddsson was Prime minister for 13 years and Governor of the Central bank from 2005-2009 when he was fired by the government of Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir.
