Presidential nominations, requiring 1,500 to 3,000 voter endorsements, are due today. The electoral commission will review submissions this weekend to confirm valid nominations, which may result in a record number of candidates.

Historic hat count

Nominations for the presidency, along with endorsements from 1,500 to 3,000 voters, must be submitted between 10 AM and 12 PM today, RÚV reports. The electoral commission will then review over the weekend, so as to determine how many valid nominations have been received.

If all those who claim to have gathered the required number of endorsements submit their nominations, voters will have more choices than ever before in a presidential election, with up to ten candidates (assuming no more manage to collect 1,500 signatures).

Those who had the required number of signatures by yesterday were Arnar Þór Jónsson, Ásdís Rán Gunnarsdóttir, Ástþór Magnússon, Baldur Þórhallsson, Halla Hrund Logadóttir, Halla Tómasdóttir, Helga Þórisdóttir, Jón Gnarr, Katrín Jakobsdóttir, and Steinunn Ólína Þorsteinsdóttir.

Never exceeded nine

As noted by RÚV, never before have so many been in contention. The most candidates previously were eight years ago when Guðni Th. Jóhannesson was elected president, with nine candidates. That broke a four-year record, so to speak, as there were six candidates in 2012, the last time Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson was elected. Previously, the most had been four candidates, in 1980, when Vigdís Finnbogadóttir was elected, and in 1996, when Ólafur Ragnar was first elected.

The fewest candidates in presidential elections were in 1968, 1988, and 2020, with only two. In the first presidential election where the public voted, in 1952, there were three candidates. Ásgeir Ásgeirsson was elected president. (See list of historical candidates below):
