Police in Westman Islands Rescue Hawk

A weak and immobile hawk was found in the vicinity of the police station in the Westman Islands, south of Iceland, earlier this week. Police officers came to the bird’s rescue.

“It is a young bird, probably between one and three years old and it hasn’t reached puberty yet,” ornithologist Erpur Snaer Hansen at the South Iceland Natural History Museum told Fréttabladid.

Hansen said young hawks often run into difficulties during the first years of their lives, while they are learning hunting techniques. “This one is really skinny so it has not been especially successful.”

The hawk will be transported to the Farm Animal Zoo in Laugardalur in Reykjavík where it will be cared for until it has recovered.
