Police Raid Squat in Downtown Reykjavík

Between 40 and 50 police officers wearing riot uniforms broke their way into an abandoned building that had been overtaken by squatters on Vatnsstígur 4 in central Reykjavík earlier today, arresting some of the people who were living there.

A number of people had taken up illegal residence in the building and refused to leave. Police had given them time until 4 pm yesterday to comply with their demands and clear the building, but the squatters barricaded themselves inside, mbl.is reports.

Some of the squatters put up a fight and threw all sorts of loose objects at police, who in response resorted to pepper spray. Firefighters and special police forces were standing by, but did not have to intervene.
