Police Officers March in Demand for Better Wages

Around 300 police officers from all around the country marched in their uniforms in Reykjavík yesterday stressing their discontent with the verdict of the Court of Arbitration one week ago regarding their wages.

“I am extremely pleased with how many people showed up and the solidarity police officers show for each other—not that I expected anything else,” said police officer Gestur Pálmarsson to MBL Television.

It was decided at a meeting between representatives of the Police Federation of Iceland and Minister of Finance Steingrímur J. Sigfússon yesterday to establish a task force to resolve the issue.

Representatives of the Prime, Finance and Interior Ministries, as well as a negotiation committee of police officers, will have a seat on the task force.

Riot police officers recently resigned from their duties in protest of their wages.
