Police Officers Attacked in Downtown Reykjavík

By Iceland Review

Four police officers were attacked by a group of five while patrolling downtown Reykjavík on Friday and were taken to the emergency room because of the injuries they suffered. The attackers were brought before a judge and agreed to go into custody.

Minister of Justice Björn Bjarnason said the event is scary and that the safety of police officers needs to be increased, Morgunbladid reports.

“This last incident is yet further proof that police officers have to be prepared for everything. We should think about training watch dogs for the police and make sure that officers have defense equipment powerful enough to scare potential attackers away,” the minister wrote on his blog bjorn.is.

Chief of the Capital Region Police Stefán Eiríksson said police consider this a very serious incident, adding that violence towards police officers has increased.
