Police officer charged with corruption

A police officer from Reykjavík has been charged after an investigation revealed that he had ordered a lower ranking police officer to drive him to the airport with flashing lights and sirens to catch a private flight.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” />

Morgunbladid daily cites sources saying that earlier this year the officer called a police station in Reykjavík in the early hours of the morning. He explained that was he was about to miss his flight and therefore he needed someone to pick him up and drive to <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags” />Keflavík International Airport.

Unbeknownst to them, an automatic logbook registered that the car was driven to the airport with the sirens and flashing lights on and well above the speed limit. Since the officer was off duty and was going abroad for private matters, an internal investigation was launched.

A charge against the officer has now been submitted to the district court of Reykjanes. He has been temporarily suspended while the case is ongoing.
