Police: No Evidence of Assault on Six-Year-Old

Police investigating the alleged assault against a six-year-old boy in a playground in the Reykjavík suburb of Breiðholt say they now believe that the incident did not occur. According to chief inspector at Kópavogur police Gylfi Sigurðsson, there is no evidence that the attack took place.

The man, a football coach, claiming to have witnessed the events at a football pitch last week, was the sole source for the story which first appeared in Fréttablaðið on Monday.

Fréttablaðið have since reported that the man could not provide any further details on the incident to police, claiming that the families involved wanted to settle the matter privately.

The paper printed the update and an apology for publishing the original story without additional sources today.
