Police to increase efforts to prevent rape

By Iceland Review

Due to a recent increase in rape cases in Reykjavík, police officers on weekend shifts have been ordered to patrol remote areas where rape is likely to occur.

Three women have been raped in the capital recently, in places such as behind the College of Reykjavík and the National Theater, Morgunbladid reports.

Violence against women in outdoor public spaces is new to the Reykjavík police. Reported rapes in Iceland have more commonly taken place at home or the restrooms of night clubs.

On weekends, 40 police officers patrol the city or are on call. In addition, it has been considered to install security cameras in places where women are more likely to be assaulted.

The three recent rape cases have yet to be solved.
