A member of the police force in Borgarnes, West Iceland, has been given notice because of budget cuts, according to DV. That, despite the fact that he has never insulted anyone, never misused his position, never talked behind anyone’s back, never complained about his food, never dressed inappropriately, never left the toilet seat in an upright position, never been guilty of sexual harassment, and always worked faster than others, especially when it comes to finding drugs. He started work with the police when he was less than a year old and has faithfully served ever since.
Police Officer Laufey Gísladóttir, who has been taking care of Nökkvi since he joined the force, laments the decision of authorities to let him go. She says the police force is his registered owner. What the savings of firing Nökkvi involve is that the police officer who so far has been paid for training him will now be on regular police duty full time. Laufey still plans to continue taking care of him although “child support” and reimbursements for dog food are history.
One thing is certain, Nökkvi, a black Lab, will be missed by his partners. He turned five in March. No information is available about his plans. With all the experience he has accumulated, his chances of obtaining employment elsewhere may not be bad. After all, his CV includes being national champion of narcotic detection dogs in 2012 and 2013. He did not compete last year.
Nökkvi was not available for comment.
