Polar Bear Statue Stolen in Iceland

A polar bear statue was nicked from the shop Ísbjörninn (The Polar Bear) on Laugavegur, Reykjavík’s main shopping street, on Thursday night.

Polar bear statue at Hótel Rangá. Not the one that was stolen.

The shop has two large statues of polar bears propped outside its doors to advertise its name. Four young men pulled up in a white van and took off with one of the statues.

The stolen statue was later discovered by staff at the Reykjavík Zoo and Family Park in Laugardalur, where it had been placed in full view.

It is believed that the four pranksters were trying to help Jón Gnarr, the leader of the Best Party which won a sweeping victory in the recent municipal elections, keep his election promise of placing a polar bear in the park, visir.is reports.
