PM Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson just announced on RÚV TV that he plans to run against former PM Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson for the position of chairman of the Progressive Party. Sigurður Ingi is currently serving as the party’s vice chairman, but he recently announced he would not run for that position again, leading to speculation that he might be contemplating a run for the leadership position.
A meeting of the party group of the Progressive Party was called on short notice today, after which the party group declared its full support of current party leader and former PM Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson. The party’s leader will be chosen at the party’s convention in October.
