PM: No Reason to Suspend Economics Minister

Prime Minister of Iceland Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir said after a parliamentary group meeting with the Social Democrats yesterday that Minister of Economics Affairs Gylfi Magnússon, who has been subject to criticism lately due to his comments on loans indexed in foreign currency, will not be asked to step down.

“There is nothing related to this case that gives me reason to suspend him from the chair of economics minister,” Sigurdardóttir told reporters after the meeting.

She said Magnússon had explained his actions and she finds his explanation satisfactory, adding that at the meeting it was revealed that Magnússon has full support from the Social Democrats, Fréttabladid reports.

“However, I am dissatisfied with not having received evaluations from the Central Bank and the Ministry of Economic Affairs,” the PM said, stating she and the finance minister should have received the bank’s legal evaluation of the foreign currency loans.
