PM: Icelanders “satisfied” with US defense draft

Icelanders are satisfied with the new draft defense agreement with the United States, according to Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde. This is reported in all the main media today. The agreement will not be made public, but according to the PM the US has vowed to defend Iceland. However, this is conditional on agreements regarding other aspects of the US military’s departure from Iceland, such as the closing of the base and the leaving behind of radar equipment and other structures.

Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir, leader of the opposition, says she is satisfied with her meeting with the Prime Minister, in which the departure of the US military was discussed. In her view, however, there is little negotiating to be done, as the US is making unilateral decisions regarding the defense agreement.
